London City Design Tour – part one

So the weekend just gone, I took part in the London edition of meet the blogger (remember I was in Stockholm with them last month).

Similarly to Stockholm, day one of the event was packed full of presentations, workshops, networking and laughs in the ultra modern, five star surroundings of the ME London on Aldwych.

At the end of day one we were invited to take a tour of the newly opened hotel. Designed by Foster + Partners who also, for the first time designed all the interior spaces of the hotel too. The communal spaces are very striking, dark, elegant and pretty darn luxurious. The rooms are very minimal, no artwork or ‘extras’ but beautifully finished. Not my style at all but the views are great.

The ground floor bar area is very imposing, and makes a real statement as you enter the hotel. I do rather like all that metal going on with the lines and curves (the actual bar is tucked away behind the floor to ceiling ‘bars’).

The hotel has two restaurants; STK London is very glossy, quite opulent and just, well fancy. The other, Cucina Asellina is lighter with more of a rustic Mediterranean feel.

Day two we bundled up (it wasn’t Stockholm cold, but it was cold) and took to the streets of west London for the London City Design Tour.

First stop, the Tom Dixon store, Portobello Dock (Ladbroke Grove).

Second stop – Phoenix on Golborne Road.
